Homeschool Curriculum Maps

Welcome! I hope you find this set of curriculum maps helpful in planning your homeschool journey. As I’m sure you know, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to children and education. Therefore, I encourage you to see this as a starting point in you and your child’s educational journey.

Homeschool Curriculum Maps help me Balance Planning + Flexibility

My approach is to balance learning foundational skills with the belief that curiosity and connections are more important than content, so I have incorporated a LOT of hands-on learning activities as well as engaging online and written resources. I don’t want to learn something if it’s not fun or I don’t see the point, so I don’t expect the same of children.

There’s no one right way to do anything, and homeschooling is no exception. My curriculum maps are meant to provide loose guidance to make sure you’re covering all the basics while allowing plenty of time for kids to learn through play. I wanted an option that didn’t feel overwhelming to me or require extensive prep time. Most months only really require a couple hours of prep/planning ahead of time to gather/order supplies, print lesson resources, and briefly scan each lesson.

Curriculum maps help organize grade-level learning topics and the abundance of enriching educational resources available that might spark curiosity and a love of learning.

Curriculum Maps Help Visually Organize Lesson Planning for the Year

My curriculum maps are organized by grade level with a whole year of monthly curriculum calendars. I’m a visual person so this helps me map out time better so I don’t feel overwhelmed or like I’m forgetting something. This is not a jam-packed schedule, but it does cover all grade-level topics. I prefer doing block learning rather than rushing through every subject every day, so these curriculum maps reflect that style.

Year-Round Homeschool Schedule

This lesson planner, or lesson map calendar, or curriculum map (whatever you want to call it) is organized into months and includes 48 weeks of school with 4 weeks off at different times of the year to accommodate our work and vacation schedules. None of our days are fully packed with school since it needs to balance a homeschooling parent who also works full-time from home. If you have more time or more motivated kids, you could always compress the schedule into 6 months or add additional lessons that fit your learning goals.

Grades Pre-K through 8 use a monthly curriculum calendar approach. Grades 9 and 10, however, allow greater student-ownership over when they cover the materials. Half of their time is intended to be spent working on project- or interest-based learning. The other half of their time is self-directed to cover the lessons included in subject maps rather than monthly maps. Students can choose how to schedule their own time as they grow into young adults.

Lesson Block Planning for Homeschooling

I typically plan for two 45-minute lessons per day plus several 15-minute blocks of time for typing practice, foreign language, English/math games, music, exercise, and reading. With younger kids, I guide them through each of the 45-minute lessons. Once they can read, I usually guide them through one lesson per day and the second lesson is self-directed using online subscriptions or curriculum resources. As a working mom, teaching independence to my kids early on is essential. When I’m homeschooling, they have my undivided attention. When I need to work, I give them a few minutes of set-up attention and then they’re usually happy to play or learn on their own for an hour or so. I also encourage my kids to pursue project-based learning explorations. More details and examples for that in each year’s curriculum map page.

Types of Learning Resources in the Curriculum Maps

The learning blocks contain links to a variety of resources including free printables, Teachers Pay Teachers printables, Amazon games/workbooks/toys/products, paid print curriculums, free online subscriptions, paid online subscriptions, YouTube videos, free blogs/websites demonstrating hands-on science experiments or art projects, specialty educational products, etc. Each month also includes a reading list of recommended books.
